In short

What is the Readability Score Checker?

The readability score checker counts words and sentences, works out the average sentence length and calculates a Flesch reading ease score for English text, with a plain-language reading of the result. Clear, simple writing is easier for people and for answer engines to use, but the score is only a rough guide.

How it works

Flesch reading ease = 206.835 minus 1.015 times the average words per sentence, minus 84.6 times the average syllables per word. Higher scores mean easier text. Syllables are estimated by rules for English, so results are approximate and work best on ordinary prose.

How to use it

  1. Paste your English text into the box.
  2. Read the counts and the reading ease score.
  3. Shorten long sentences and swap long words for simpler ones.
  4. Check again and keep the meaning accurate.
