What is the Percentage Change Calculator?
This calculator compares an old value with a new value. It shows the plain difference, the per cent change relative to the old value, and whether the figure increased or decreased. Use it for price changes, sales growth, marks or any before and after comparison.
How it works
The change is the new value minus the old value. The per cent change is that change divided by the old value and multiplied by 100. A negative result means the value fell. If the old value is zero, the per cent change is shown as 0 because it cannot be defined.
How to use it
- Enter the old (starting) value.
- Enter the new (final) value.
- Read the change and the per cent change.
- Check the direction to see if it was an increase or decrease.
Percentage Change Calculator — FAQ
Is a fall of 50 per cent undone by a rise of 50 per cent?
No. A fall from 100 to 50 is 50 per cent, but rising from 50 to 100 is 100 per cent, because each change is measured against its own starting value.
What does a negative per cent change mean?
It means the new value is lower than the old value. For example, 200 falling to 150 is a change of minus 25 per cent.
What if the old value is zero?
A per cent change from zero cannot be calculated, so the tool shows 0 per cent. The plain change and direction are still shown.
