In short

What is the Data Storage Converter?

This data storage converter turns a size in bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes or terabytes into all the others. It uses 1024-based steps, so 1 KB is 1,024 bytes and 1 GB is 1,024 MB. Some drive makers use steps of 1,000, so printed capacities may differ.

How it works

The value is converted to bytes using powers of 1024: 1 KB is 1,024 bytes, 1 MB is 1,048,576 bytes, 1 GB is 1,073,741,824 bytes and 1 TB is 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. Each result divides the byte figure by the target unit size.

How to use it

  1. Type the value you want to convert.
  2. Choose the unit it is currently in.
  3. Read every converted unit in the results.
  4. Change the number or unit to convert again.
Questions

Data Storage Converter — FAQ

How many MB are in a GB?

Using 1024-based steps, 1 GB is 1,024 MB.

Why does my new drive show less space than advertised?

Makers often count 1 GB as 1,000 million bytes, while computers count in steps of 1,024. The same bytes therefore show as a smaller number.

How many bytes are in a terabyte?

With 1024-based steps, one terabyte is 1,099,511,627,776 bytes.
