What is the Character Counter?

The Character Counter shows how many characters your text has, with and without spaces, and compares the total with a limit you set. It helps when you write to a fixed length, such as an SMS, a meta description, a page title, a bio or a social post. Everything runs in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your text into the box.
  2. Enter the character limit you are writing to, or 0 for no limit.
  3. Read the counts and the characters remaining or over the limit.
  4. Trim or extend the text until it fits.
Questions

Character Counter — FAQ

Do spaces and line breaks count as characters?

Yes, in the first figure. A space or a line break counts as one character. The second figure leaves out all spaces and line breaks.

How many characters should a meta description have?

Search engines choose what to show, so there is no fixed rule. Many writers aim for roughly one or two short sentences and check the preview in their own search results.

Are emoji counted as one character?

This tool counts each emoji as one character. Some platforms count them as two or more, so check the rules of the platform you post to.
