Add Line Numbers
Put a number at the start of every line of text, with your own start number and separator.
What is the Add Line Numbers?
The Add Line Numbers tool places a number at the start of each line of your text. Choose the first number, pick a separator such as a full stop, bracket, colon or dash, and decide whether blank lines are skipped. It is useful for code snippets, scripts, lists, legal drafts and anything that needs reference numbers.
How to use it
- Paste your text into the box, one item per line.
- Enter the number to start from.
- Choose the separator and whether to skip blank lines.
- Copy the numbered text.
Add Line Numbers — FAQ
Can I start counting from a number other than 1?
Yes. Type any whole number in the start box, for example 0 for code-style numbering or 101 for a continuing list.
What happens to blank lines?
By default they receive a number like any other line. Tick the skip option to leave them empty and carry on counting from the next line with text.
Does it pad numbers so they line up?
No. Numbers are added as they are. For a tidy column, use a separator such as a colon or tab.
