What is the Employee Turnover Rate Calculator?

This calculator finds the employee turnover rate for a period. Enter the headcount at the start, the headcount at the end and how many employees left. It averages the two headcounts and divides the leavers by that average, so you can compare months, quarters or years.

How it works

Average headcount is the opening headcount plus the closing headcount, divided by 2. The turnover rate is the number of employees who left divided by the average headcount, times 100. The net change is the closing headcount minus the opening headcount. A zero average shows zero.

How to use it

  1. Enter the headcount at the start of the period.
  2. Enter the headcount at the end of the period.
  3. Enter how many employees left during the period.
  4. Read the average headcount and the turnover rate.
Questions

Employee Turnover Rate Calculator — FAQ

Should I count resignations and terminations together?

This tool uses one leavers figure. Count all exits for overall turnover, or only voluntary exits if you want voluntary turnover.

Can I compare monthly and yearly turnover?

Only with care. A monthly rate covers a shorter time, so multiply by twelve for a rough annual view or measure the whole year directly.

Do new hires change the rate?

They change the closing headcount and so the average, but the rate itself depends on how many people left.
