In short

What is the BMI Calculator?

This BMI calculator works out body mass index from your weight in kilograms and height in centimetres. It shows the BMI value, the standard WHO category and the weight range that corresponds to a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 at your height. It is a general screening measure only.

How it works

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Height in centimetres is divided by 100 first. The categories used are underweight below 18.5, normal weight 18.5 to 24.9, overweight 25 to 29.9 and obese 30 or above. A zero height shows 0.

How to use it

  1. Enter your weight in kilograms.
  2. Enter your height in centimetres.
  3. Read your BMI and category.
  4. Check the weight range for a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9.
Questions

BMI Calculator — FAQ

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

No. BMI does not separate muscle from fat and ignores age, sex and build. Treat it as a rough screening figure.

What BMI is considered normal?

The standard WHO band for normal weight is 18.5 to 24.9. Some regions use different cut-offs for specific populations.

Should I use BMI to make health decisions?

Not alone. Speak to a doctor or qualified professional for advice about your weight or health.
