What is the Churn Rate Calculator?

Churn rate is the share of customers you had at the start of a period who left by the end of it. Divide customers lost by customers at the start and multiply by 100. Retention is the opposite, the share who stayed. Track both over the same period each time.

How it works

Churn % = customers lost / customers at start x 100. Retention % = 100 minus churn %. Customers retained = start minus lost. Average lifetime in periods = 100 / churn %, a rough guide that assumes churn stays steady. Zero start gives zero.

How to use it

  1. Enter the number of customers at the start of the period.
  2. Enter how many of those customers left during the period.
  3. Read the churn and retention rates.
  4. Repeat each month or quarter using the same definition of a lost customer.
Questions

Churn Rate Calculator — FAQ

Should new customers be in the count?

No. Use only customers who were there at the start, otherwise new sign-ups dilute the churn rate.

What counts as a lost customer?

Define it clearly, for example a cancelled plan or no purchase in a set time, and apply the same rule every period.

Why is average lifetime only a guide?

It assumes the churn rate never changes, but real churn is often higher early on and falls later.
