What is the Working Hours Calculator?
This calculator finds the hours worked between a start time and an end time, after deducting a break in minutes. Times use the 24-hour HH:MM form. If the end time is earlier than the start time, it treats the shift as crossing midnight and shows the result in hours and minutes and in decimal hours.
How it works
The time between start and end is end minus start in minutes, with 24 hours added when the end is earlier than the start. The break in minutes is subtracted. Decimal hours are the net minutes divided by 60, rounded to two places. Equal start and end times give zero.
How to use it
- Enter the start time as HH:MM in 24-hour form.
- Enter the end time as HH:MM.
- Enter the unpaid break in minutes.
- Read the hours worked and the decimal hours.
Working Hours Calculator — FAQ
How do I enter 6 pm?
Use the 24-hour form, so 6 pm is 18:00. A time such as 9am is not accepted, and the tool will ask you to correct it.
What happens with a night shift?
If the end time is earlier than the start time, such as 22:00 to 06:00, the tool assumes the shift ends the next day.
Why show decimal hours?
Payroll and timesheets often need hours as a decimal, where 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours.
