In short

What is the Retirement Corpus Calculator?

This retirement corpus calculator inflates your current monthly expense to the year you retire, then estimates the corpus needed to cover rising expenses for the retirement years you enter, while the balance earns a post-retirement return. The result is arithmetic on your assumptions, not a plan.

How it works

The monthly expense at retirement is today's expense x (1 + inflation)^years to retire. Annual expense is twelve times that, withdrawn at the start of each retirement year and raised by inflation yearly. The corpus is the present value of these withdrawals at the post-retirement return, summed over the retirement years.

How to use it

  1. Enter your current monthly expenses.
  2. Enter the years until you retire and the inflation rate.
  3. Enter the years you expect to spend in retirement and the return on the corpus.
  4. Read the expense at retirement and the corpus needed.
Questions

Retirement Corpus Calculator — FAQ

Which inflation and return should I assume?

Use figures you find reasonable. This tool does not suggest any rate, and small changes in either can shift the corpus a lot.

Does this include other income like pensions?

No. It assumes expenses are met only from the corpus. Reduce your expense figure if other income will cover part of it.

Why is the corpus so large?

Expenses grow with inflation through your working years and again in retirement, so the first retirement year already costs far more than today.
